Creating Spring Flowers in the Lake District ~ with Emily Brooks.
Suitable for beginners as well as those with experience, we will carve and print using the multi-block jigsaw linocut printing technique, creating striking and colourful images of spring flowers within the Cumbrian landscape.
With clear explanations and demonstrations, our tutor will provide an encouraging atmosphere with the opportunity to work at your own pace whatever your level of experience.
We have a great selection of images to work from so there'll be no shortage of inspiration. You are also welcome to bring along images that you would like to work from as A4 printouts or sketches.
Expert tuition will be on hand at every stage – even people who say they cannot draw create beautiful linocut prints. By the end of the workshop, you’ll have designed, cut and printed your own multi-colour artworks to take home, giving you skills and confidence to continue printmaking at home.
The course will cover:
- An introduction to linocut printing (or a refresher if you've done it before) with examples
- Creating and printing a sampler to gain confidence with carving tools and try different mark-making techniques.
- Developing your final design, with support if needed.
- Transferring the design onto a lino block and carving.
- Ink rolling and hand-printing with a selection of colours using water-based printing inks.
- Advice and tuition will be on hand at every step.

Please bring: Materials are provided, but do wear old clothes and comfortable shoes. Please bring reading glasses if you use them. Emily will bring suitable reference material, but if you prefer you can bring your own images for inspiration.
About the Artist An artist, printmaker and mountain enthusiast based in the English Lake District, I mostly work in relief printmaking and constantly inspired by the landscapes I immerse myself within. Usually, just a brief moment or a passing glimpse triggers a desire to create. Each experience is held, allowing it time to develop as a memory and I begin working once the memory has settled.
Sometimes, the landscape I'm recollecting is familiar, and I sketch directly from memory. Other times, I'll draw a scene from life using the sketching process as a tool to embed memory, continuing in the studio without referencing the original sketch.
The most enduring aspects of any scene are consequently the ones that feature most prominently in my work; a larger than life mountain, a simplified pattern, exaggerated negative spaces - all linked by the desire to cherish and share the lived connection between the landscape and the viewer.
Having studied art and always sketched, linocut printing is a natural progression for my graphic style of drawing. Mostly self-taught, I started small, printing atop my little kitchen table using a wooden spoon to press the prints. A subsequent house move allowed me the home studio I’d been dreaming of, from where i now produce my Lake District prints.
