Lino Cut Christmas Card making with Sarah Cemmick
For those of you on Instagram who have seen Sarah's work, you will know how beautiful all her wildlife prints are, with her wonderfully expressive hares being particularly stunning.
Sarah will be here in early December to take a Christmas card lino cut workshop. This course is suitable for complete beginners as well as those with some experience, Sarah will take you through the rudiments of lino cut and the use of various blades for texture, mark making and effect so you can get used to the tools available to you. Each students will have their own set to use on the day.
Sarah will provide some suggestions for designs and of course you can bring your own if you wish and she will let you know if it's do-able on the day or how to best simplify it. Keeping it simple is a good thing to bear in mind for the time available. Students can design their image or use a provided image to transfer to the cutting surface known as a ‘block’ in lino cut terms. You will be working on a 15cm square traditional grey lino.
You will then learn how to transfer your image onto the block and cut the design leaving a relief surface to be inked up and printed using a hand burnishing technique. The printing will be using metallic gold and silver inks on coloured card for a real Christmassy feel. This lino plate will be yours to take home at the end of the day to print more cards.
Fri 4th December 2020
Kindly note that there will be an additional charge of £10 to cover the ink and materials. Typically this course runs with around 8 students. Suitable for Beginners / Ints.
Please bring: Some disposable gloves to fit you, a pencil and rubber and an apron to protect clothes . We will send you a list of what else to bring nearer the time and some considerations for ideas for your project
Sarah Graduated in Environmental illustration at the University of Sunderland in 1996. With the help of the Prince’s Trust she began printmaking full time, which started a love affair with Lino.
In 1998 she received the Lloyd’s private banking award from the Society of Wildlife Artists at The Mall Galleries. London for her print ‘Rhino Lino’. Using traditional techniques, with the same set of tools she has used since her very first linocut, designs are carved into Lino blocks. Prints are pulled using linseed oil ink which allows some pieces to be additionally tinted with watercolour to give added texture. She also uses beautiful Japanese tissues with gold & silver foil flecks, further enhancing the decorative effects to her printed images.
Influenced by wildlife be it fluffy, furry or feathered, Sarah has continued to explore a variety of themes, the Hare being a particular favourite.
The current collection of work has focused on the positioning of each subject on the paper. The space to let the viewer decide on what the animal is thinking, its next move or feeling. Works are held in private collections across the globe and have been commissioned by Artists Cards Ltd, Holland & Holland, Mayfair, London and the National Trust and can be seen at galleries throughout the UK.
