Beginners' Calligraphy Day with Gillian Hazeldine
Come and spend a day beginning to learn art of calligraphy, literally ‘beautiful writing’. Contemporary calligraphy is based on the writing of scribes working from the 5th century AD right up to the Renaissance. In this workshop we will study the writing of a 10th century scribe, learning a script called The Foundational Hand. You will learn the forms of the letters, how to space them and how to use the broad-edged pen.

There will be six single tables available. In addition, there will be two double tables, for those able to work in a bubble of two. Please book as appropriate and contact us if you are waiting as a single person, thank you.
Please bring: A full pen can be supplied with ink for the day. Exemplars will be provided following teaching, with semi-transparent paper for the morning session. at a cost of £7.50. You will also need: a drawing board with some padding on it, either blotting paper or some newsprint. Good quality A3 cartridge paper, two pencils, one H and one HB, an eraser, a ruler and some masking tape. Full details will be provided with your confirmation.
Typically this course runs with around 8-10 students. Suitable for beginners.
About the Artist: Jilly Hazeldine is a professional calligrapher and lettering artist and has taught at all levels for the past 30 years. She is a Fellow of the Society of Scribes and Illuminators and a Full Member of Letter Exchange. She is author of ‘Contemporary Calligraphy, How to Use Formal Scripts Today’ published by Robert Hale. Her own work uses drawn and painted letters and she is particularly interested in manipulating shape and form and the texture of writing on the page.
